Bank origins stretch back to 1765, when John Taylor
and Sampson
set up a private banking business in Birmingham,
England. Two sons of the original partners then
followed in their footsteps by establishing a
bank – Barnetts Hoares Hanbury and
- in London’s Lombard Street. This then
eventually became absorbed into the
Banking Company.
Strong connections with South America began in
1918 with the acquisition of the London and River
Plate Bank. The later merger with the London and
Brazilian Bank resulting in the Bank of London
and South America ( BOLSA ). During 1971,
Bank bought the controlling interest in BOLSA
and then merged it with
Bank Europe to form Lloyds and Bolsa International
Bank. This name then changed in 1974 to
Bank International ( LBI ) and LBI was itself
merged into
Bank in 1986.
1988 Saw
Bank merge five of its businesses with the Abbey
Life Insurance Company to create
Abbey Life.
During the early 1990s,
Bank had offices in 30 countries, from Argentina
to the USA. In New Zealand, an already commanding
presence as the National Bank of New Zealand was
strengthened further by the 1994 takeover of the
Rural Bank, making it the leading provider of
agricultural finance.
On August 1 1995 the Cheltenham & Gloucester
( C&G ) joined the
Bank Group. Later on in the same year, on 28 December,
Lloyds Bank Group merged with TSB Group to form
TSB Group plc. In September 1996,
Abbey Life became a wholly owned subsidiary of
TSB Group.
TSB, in November 1998 a full-scale pilot began
with 13 branches offering a single branded service
and product range to customers of both banks under
the
TSB name. 28 June 1999 saw
TSB launched on the high street.
